Tiffin University & City of Tiffin Host Drone Community Fly Day

The Tiffin University (TU) Drone Academy and the City of Tiffin, Ohio will co-host a Drone Community Fly Day on Saturday, May 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Hedges-Boyer Park near the disc golf course parking lot. The event’s primary goal is to educate participants on how to operate unmanned aircraft system (UAS) technology safely for recreational use. There will also be an explanation of the Academy’s mission and its benefit to Tiffin residents. This event is free and open to the public. Attendees may bring their own drone or choose to fly one provided for them. No prior experience is necessary.

"I am excited about the potential partnerships between The Tiffin University Drone Academy and the City of Tiffin,” says Mayor Aaron D. Montz. “The Community Fly Day will provide residents and businesses with the chance to hear more on how drones may help improve on safety and effectiveness while allowing folks to get up close and personal with these devices."

Fly-demonstrations from several local organizations will also take place, including the Amateur Radio Emergency Service, the Sandusky County EMA Drone Team, the Tiffin University Drone Academy and the Seneca County Drone Team, a collaboration between the Tiffin and Fostoria Police Departments and the Seneca County Sheriff's Office.

“The goal of the day is to allow people to experience hands-on drone flight and learn how to fly legally,” says Owen Fritz, Tiffin University Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Drone Academy. “We also want to build a relationship with the public in order to foster future collaboration between the academy and community stakeholders. We are very open to hearing what people want to see from us down the road.”
