Fostoria Sets Unofficial World Record with Largest Human Image of a Train
More than 630 participants gather during Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 visit
Fostoria established an unofficial world record on Tuesday, July 14, as more than 630 participants gathered at the Fostoria Iron Triangle Rail Park to create the Largest Human Image of a Train during Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014’s visit to the community.
The record attempt was organized by Destination Seneca County as part of the community’s celebration surrounding Big Boy No. 4014’s public display in Fostoria. Participants assembled into the shape of a steam locomotive while the completed formation was documented through aerial photography.
The event attracted participants from across Ohio and throughout the United States, as well as Ontario, Canada, highlighting the widespread interest generated by Big Boy No. 4014’s return to Fostoria. Registrants represented communities in Florida, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Massachusetts, New York, Alaska, and many other locations.
The unofficial world record attempt was one component of a full day of activities held throughout Fostoria. Visitors were invited to view Big Boy No. 4014 at the Norfolk Southern Fostoria Automotive Distribution Center before exploring the Iron Triangle Mini Rail Fest, Downtown Fostoria family activities, museums, attractions, restaurants, retailers, and special promotions offered by local businesses.
“This event demonstrated what can happen when a community works together,” said Seneca County Commissioner Brent Busdeker. “Big Boy brought visitors to Fostoria, but what they experienced was much more than a locomotive. They experienced our businesses, our attractions, our hospitality, and the pride our community has in welcoming people from across the country. That is something our community can be proud of.”
Planning for the day involved coordination among the City of Fostoria, Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific, the Fostoria Rail Preservation Society, public safety agencies, volunteers, community organizations, and local businesses. Beyond Laser Creations produced the commemorative event shirts, while Sweetums Signatures provided additional event shirts to meet participant demand.
The July 14 celebration also included food trucks, railroad vendors, nonprofit organizations, family activities, and extended business hours throughout Fostoria, providing visitors with opportunities to experience the community beyond the locomotive.
