1976 β 2026
In 1976, Tiffin celebrated America’s Bicentennial with a parade to remember. The Tiffin Area Bicentennial Parade, held June 13, 1976, featured 326 units and lasted nearly four hours.
Fifty years later, the 2026 Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival Parade will recognize America’s 250th birthday by revisiting part of that celebration through the Float Flashback Decorating Contest.
Eight photographs of memorable floats from Tiffin’s 1976 Bicentennial Parade have been selected as inspiration. Participants may choose one historic float and create their own 2026 interpretation.
Participants may also enter the America 250 Original category by designing an entirely original America 250-themed float.
How to Participate
1. Register for the Parade
All contest participants must first register for the Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival Parade.
2. Choose Your Inspiration
Choose one of the eight historic Float Flashbacks shown below or enter the America 250 Original category.
Multiple organizations may choose the same historic float. There are no reservations, assignments or exclusive claims to a Float Flashback design.
3. Register for the Float Contest
After completing the regular parade registration, complete the separate Float Flashback Decorating Contest registration form at the bottom of this page.
4. Make It Your Own
Use the 1976 photograph as inspiration for your organization’s 2026 creation. Entries are not expected to be exact replicas.
Preserve enough of the original float’s recognizable character while adapting the design to represent your organization today. Colors, materials, signs, wording, costumes and other elements may be updated or reimagined.
5. Parade Day & Judging
Contest entries must be fully decorated, parade-ready and in their assigned staging location no later than 9:00 AM on parade day.
Judges will travel through the staging area and evaluate each registered Float Flashback and America 250 Original entry before the parade begins.
Choose Your Float Flashback
Choose any of the eight featured floats from Tiffin’s 1976 Bicentennial Parade as the inspiration for your 2026 creation.
The goal is not to duplicate every detail. Judges will be looking for the recognizable essence and spirit of the original design combined with your organization’s creativity.

America 250 Original entries do not need to resemble any of the eight historic Float Flashbacks.
How Float Flashback Entries Will Be Judged
Float Flashback entries will be judged on a 100-point scale.
| Category | Points | What Judges Will Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Bicentennial Spirit | 30 | How well the float captures the overall spirit, theme and feeling of its 1976 inspiration. |
| Creative Re-Creation | 25 | How creatively the organization takes the 1976 concept and interprets it for 2026. |
| Recognizable Inspiration | 20 | Whether judges can clearly recognize which historic Float Flashback inspired the entry through its colors, shapes, decorations, layout, costumes, signs, props or other features. |
| Craftsmanship & Presentation | 15 | Overall appearance, construction, effort and attention to detail. |
| Parade Wow Factor | 10 | The overall visual impact of the entry and its ability to stand out along the parade route. |
| Total | 100 |
Judges are evaluating the essence and spirit of the original Float Flashback, not whether the entry is an exact replica.
