From Risdon and Rome to the Rails: The Birth of Fostoria and Its Railroad Legacy

Press release courtesy of Ellen Gatrell, Fostoria Rail Preservation Society.

Did you know that Fostoria was dedicated on July 14, 1854? The two villages of Risdon and Rome were combined to form Fostoria. Rome was a village between the streets of South, Poplar, North & Wood. Risdon was the village located in the area of Countyline & Summit Streets where today you can see the Ohio Historical marker noting Risdon Square. Summit Street was the Main Street of Risdon. Risdon boundaries were Liberty, Van Buren, Parkway, Jackson and one alley west of Union Street. These two villages were platted in 1832. Fostoria was named after Charles W. Foster as he was able to negotiate a truce to combine both villages into one city.

Growth in the United States could be achieved by having railroads lay track through your city. Fostoria’s “movers & shakers” wanted Fostoria to prosper and they did whatever they could to convince the railroads of the time to lay tracks through Fostoria. In the early 1850’s the first railroad in Fostoria was the Fremont & Indiana. As noted in the original name, the railroad traveled from Fremont to Indiana. This railroad had financial issues with ownership changing constantly. Numerous names were Fremont, Lima and Union Railroad Company, Lake Erie & Pacific Railroad Company (1865), and Lake Erie & Louisville Railroad Company and eventually the Lake Erie & Western Railroad. This railroad was used often by people traveling from Indiana to Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio. The first depot was located on the NE corner of Sandusky & Main Streets, where Candyland Restaurant was located. In 1878, Lake Erie & Western built the present-day depot at 128 W. North Street for a cost of $850.00. In the 1980’s, many Fostorians remember the Camp Fire organization being in the depot. In 2007 the Fostoria Rail Preservation Society (FRPS) received a grant from the Henry H. Geary Jr. Memorial Foundation to purchase the building from the Camp Fire organization. The depot has been updated with a new roof, exterior & interior repainted, air conditioning installed and new exterior & interior lighting. Santa at the Depot has been held in the LE&W Depot for the past sixteen years.

The New York Central System laid track through Fostoria in the 1850’s. Eventually the NYC became Penn Central, and then Conrail. Conrail was split between CSX & Norfolk-Southern. The Toledo & Ohio Central laid track in the 1860’s and eventually became part of the NYC. Hocking Valley laid track through Fostoria in 1872 and this railroad eventually became the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O), later Chessie System and is now owned by CSX. The Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) laid track through Fostoria in 1873. This railroad eventually became the Chessie System, along with the Chesapeake & Ohio, and later CSX. The New York, Chicago and St. Louis, or the Nickel Plate Railroad, ran track through Fostoria in the 1880’s. The Nickel Plate Railroad eventually became Norfolk & Western and later Norfolk-Southern.

Interurbans or electric car trolleys were also an affordable mode of transportation. These electric railroad lines were in existence in this area from 1898-1932. They were the Toledo, Fostoria & Findlay Railway Company (TF&F), Tiffin, Fostoria & Eastern (TF&E) and the Fostoria & Fremont was part of the Lake Shore Electric. Henry Ford’s affordable automobiles changed transportation for middle class families. The trolleys were phased out as the family automobiles became more popular. Trolleys traveled seven days a week.

This is the first in a series of Fostoria railroad history articles. Thank you for reading.

Luck, Legacy, and the Irish Spirit of Seneca County

Seneca County’s Seasons & Stories – Monthly Blog | March 2025

Each month, we bring you stories and inspiration shaped by what makes that time of year special in Seneca County. From seasonal events and local traditions to unique places and hidden gems, our themes highlight what’s most relevant to the month.

Luck, Legacy, and the Irish Spirit of Seneca County

How lucky are we to be in Seneca County! From the early 19th century, Irish immigrants left their homeland in search of new opportunities in America. Many found a new home right here in Seneca County, where they built churches, businesses, and communities that still echo their legacy today.

Faith and Foundations

For the Irish of Seneca County, faith was a cornerstone of their community. The first Catholic church in Tiffin, St. Mary’s, was established in the 1830s, quickly becoming known as the “Irish church.” As German Catholic immigrants arrived, they formed their own congregation, leading to the creation of St. Joseph’s Church in the 1840s. Yet, St. Mary’s remained the heart of Tiffin’s Irish community for generations.

One of the most remarkable figures in the early years of St. Mary’s was Father Michael O’Sullivan, an Irish-born priest from County Kerry. Arriving in Tiffin in 1852, he courageously served during the 1853 cholera epidemic, even rescuing an infant from the bed of his deceased mother. His leadership left a lasting impression, and he was instrumental in building the second St. Mary’s Church before his transfer to Urbana in 1859.

Meanwhile, in Bascom, Ohio, Irish and German settlers sought a place of worship closer to home. In 1863, they founded St. Patrick’s Church on Bullfrog Road. Though it was destroyed by fire in 1913, the resilient parishioners rebuilt it in Bascom, where it remained in use until 2018. In October 2023, the church was demolished as part of the Ohio Demolition and Site Revitalization Program. The site will soon be home to Tiell Financial Group headquarters, continuing the community’s legacy of growth and reinvestment.

Irish Influence in Business and Leadership

Beyond their churches, Irish immigrants shaped Tiffin’s neighborhoods, businesses, and civic life. William Sullivan, a prominent businessman, arrived in Tiffin around 1825 and established a successful hardware store. His Irish heritage ran deep—he was even elected as a senator in the Fenian Brotherhood, advocating for Irish independence. Another entrepreneur, Ed Sullivan, opened “The Irish Store” in 1851. After his passing, his wife, Sarah, successfully ran the business for years, showcasing the resilience of Seneca County’s Irish families.

Irish-born clergy also played a key role in shaping the local community. Father Thomas Conlon, born to Irish parents, became the pastor of St. Mary’s in 1904, overseeing the construction of the magnificent church on Sandusky Street that still stands today.

Irish Sons on the National Stage

Not all of Seneca County’s Irish descendants stayed close to home. Paul Maloy, a Bascom native, made it to the Boston Red Sox in 1913, proudly carrying his Irish heritage onto the national stage. Meanwhile, Thomas O’Conner, originally from County Kerry, grew up in Tiffin before becoming a successful businessman and senator in Missouri. His estate funded charitable projects in both Missouri and Ohio, including contributions to St. Mary’s Church and various Tiffin institutions.

Irish Craftsmanship: Hawkes Crystal

The tradition of brilliant cut crystal has deep Irish roots, a legacy proudly continued by Hawkes Crystal in Tiffin. Thomas Gibbons Hawkes, born in County Cork, Ireland, established T.G. Hawkes & Company in New York in 1890, earning international acclaim. Today, Master Brilliant Cutter Aidan J. Scully, also a native of County Cork, carries on the tradition at Hawkes Crystal Workshop and Gallery in downtown Tiffin. Visitors can witness the intricate process of crystal cutting firsthand, appreciating this timeless craft.

A Place of Gratitude, Accomplishment, and Luck

While much has changed in Seneca County, the Irish influence remains woven into the fabric of the community. The Irish are known for their belief in luck, and in Seneca County, that luck is found in unexpected places. At Tiffin University, stepping on the dragon in the weight room brings bad luck and results in the stepper having to do push-ups. Across the river at Heidelberg University, new students take part in the T-Bridge tradition, where they either toss their lucky penny into Rock Creek or keep it forever as a symbol of either love or money. Whichever path they choose, good fortune follows for them at the university by participating in the tradition.

The stained-glass window of St. Patrick in St. Mary’s Church stands as a reminder of faith and perseverance, while Hawkes Crystal continues a legacy of craftsmanship, and establishments like the Clover Club pay homage to the community’s strong Irish roots. Whether in churches, businesses, sports, or the arts, the Irish have left an indelible mark on Seneca County. The community leans into the luck of the irish and the fun of the season with events and promotions such as the Downtown Tiffin St. Paddy’s Day 5k, the St. Mary’s Irish Reverse Raffle, the Tiffin Elks St. Patrick’s Day Beer & Food Truck Festival, special t-shirts, themed accessories, green beer offerings across the county, and so much more!

Even if you’re not of Irish heritage, you can’t help but feel lucky in Seneca County. We are thankful for the roots that built a strong community, one that instills a sense of gratitude, accomplishment, and, yes—a little luck—in all who live, learn, visit, and play here.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all who celebrate, and if you’re seeking some luck, Seek Seneca County!

Each year the Community Read encourages people in Seneca County to read the selected title and come together for special events and discussions.

As the featured event in the Community Read, Shelby Van Pelt, a New York Times best-selling author, will speak to the community on Tuesday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Chandelier Community Event Center. The author event is completely free and open to the community and will be followed by a book signing. Remarkably Bright Creatures is a charming, witty and compulsively readable exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope that traces a widow’s unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus. It is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible. Since its debut in May 2022, Remarkably Bright Creatures has become an international sensation, racking up multiple awards and accolades including being a multiple-time New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller, named Best Book of Summer in 2022 by the Chicago Tribune, The View, Southern Living, and USA Today, Amazon’s Best Book of the Year So Far in 2022, Heartland Bestsellers Award in 2023, and more. Copies of the book can be checked out at the Library, and the eBook and audiobook can be found on the “hoopla” app with no wait, and the Ohio Digital Library and Libby app.

Additional events accompanying the author visit, including an adult craft night, book discussion, and more will be released in greater detail at a later date.

The Christopher D. English Community Read was recently named in memory of former library trustee Christopher D. English and encourages Seneca County residents to read, think about, and discuss one outstanding title each spring, culminating in the author giving a public presentation in Tiffin. Past speakers have included New York Times best-selling authors Kristin Harmel, Sarah Penner and Michael Hingson, Pulitzer Prize finalist and LA Times columnist Steve Lopez, and international best-selling author Janet Beard. The series is made possible through generous funding by the Tiffin-Seneca Library Foundation and the many donors who have contributed to the Foundation over the years. Larry Michaels to discuss the Battle of Fort Stephenson

Press release courtesy of the Seneca County Museum.

The Seneca County Museum speaker series continues the theme of the War of 1812 with Larry Michaels on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.  He will be presenting “The Battle of Fort Stephenson.” The decisive American victory at the battle of Fort Stephenson in what is now Fremont on Aug. 1 and 2, 1813, ended the British land invasion of Ohio.  It also led to their complete evacuation back to Canada after Perry’s victory at the battle of Lake Erie on Sept. 10.  This PowerPoint program will show the events leading up to the battle, the battle itself, and the aftermath of the British defeat.

Larry Michaels is a retired Lutheran pastor who taught English part-time at the University of Toledo and has written several books about the history of northwest Ohio.  He and his wife Suzi now live in Fremont.

The program is free and open to the public.  The museum will be available to walk through after the program until 8:30 p.m. The Seneca County Museum is located at 28 Clay St. in Tiffin. For more information, call 419-447-5955.

Pleasant Ridge Church invites public to 200th Anniversary Celebration

Press release courtesy of Sheri Trusty, Seneca County Media Relations Coordinator.

Pleasant Ridge Church in Tiffin has the distinction of sharing its birthday with Seneca County. Both the church and the county turn 200 years old this year, and the public is invited to honor the church’s long history at the 200th Anniversary Celebration of Pleasant Ridge Church on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m.

The event will begin with a service at 2 p.m., followed by refreshments and an open house which will feature a tour of the church’s renovated basement.

The church, first known as The Egbert Church, was founded in 1824 by a group of ten local residents. The current brick building was built in 1890 and incorporated intricate elements such as ornate wooden doors, stained glass windows and a ceiling of inlaid wood harvested from nearby farms. In 1998, Egbert Cemetery and Pleasant Ridge Church were officially entered into the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service, United States Department of the Interior.

Pleasant Ridge Church is also a stop on the Secrets of Seneca County Historical Driving Tour which was created as part of the yearlong Seneca County Bicentennial Celebration. The self-guided tour has stops at historically significant sites all across the county.

Pleasant Ridge Church is located at the corner of State Route 101 and CR 38 in Tiffin.
