Run to Seneca County – The Tiffin Cross Country Carnival

The year is 1969 and 13 schools gather at Hedges-Boyer Park to run in the first ever Tiffin Cross Country Carnival. With only three races, each being two miles long, the event started and ended all within a two hour time span. The large gathering of runners from across the state of Ohio was inspired by a group of runners who wanted more fierce competition outside of the normal meets, which normally featured two to three different teams. The key for them was getting the best of the best all in one place, a place where they could push each other and all compete on the same course, at the same time, in the same conditions.

The Tiffin Cross Country Carnival has grown exponentially since its conception and has become THE race for cross country runners, coaches, and fans from all over. It has become a tradition in Seneca County and has put the city of Tiffin on the map. During what has become known as “Carnival Weekend,” the City of Tiffin will nearly double its population on race day when you count the runners and then add in the parents, coaches, and fans. More than 20,000 people are estimated to visit Seneca County during this monumental event. The Tiffin Cross Country Carnival has taken its rightful place as the second largest cross country race in THE NATION. Those who compete at Hedges-Boyer Park on the course that has been deemed “challenging and a course that is true cross country,” can be proud for crossing the finish line and competing against the best of the best.

When you take part in The Cross Country Carnival, you are taking part in history in the making. The event has been weaved in to Seneca County’s history and will continue to be part of its future. This event is just one unique happening that makes Tiffin and Seneca County the fantastic community that it is. This weekend, the traditional second weekend in September, the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival will celebrate its 53rd year and will begin its first race at 8:30am. High schoolers, middle schoolers, all the way down to elementary aged kids will have the opportunity to participate in this legendary event. Over 8,000 runners will step up to the starting line on Saturday and when the gun goes off, the next chapter of the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival will be written.

The adventure expands far outside the course lines so make sure to check out all that Tiffin and Seneca County has to offer. Shops, restaurants, museums, farmers markets, and more await you once the finish line has been crossed. Take a look into the community behind the carnival. Good luck to all and see you on Saturday!

Little Women | August 19, 20 & 27, 2022 – 7:30pm, August 28, 2022 – 2:00pm, Based on the book by Louisa May Alcott, Adapted for the stage by Marisha Chamberlain

Under the guidance of their beloved mother, the four young March sisters — tempestuous Jo, motherly Meg, shy Beth and spoiled baby Amy — struggle to keep their family going while Father’s away in the Civil War. In this beautifully dramatized adaptation of the classic novel, even as privation, illness, and sibling rivalry cast their shadows, each girl strives to find her true self. Sponsored by Reineke Family Dealerships & Croghan Colonial Bank

The Man Who Came to Dinner | October 21, 22 & 29, 2022 – 7:30 PM, October 30, 2022 – 2:00 PM, By George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart

Sheridan Whiteside —critic, lecturer, wit, radio orator, intimate friend of the great and near great— having dined at the home of the Stanleys, slips on their doorstep and breaks his hip.  The result is a tumultuous six weeks of confinement. Possibility: “Christmas may be postponed this year.” So runs the lead article in the Christmas 1939 issue of Time magazine. Whiteside turns the Stanley household upside down, forcing everyone in town to cater to his egotistical demands. Meanwhile, his essential secretary has given her notice after falling in love with a local reporter, and Whiteside must engage every weapon in his considerable arsenal of guile and manipulation to keep her in his employ—including blackmail, deceit, and the intervention of the fading sexpot actress Lorraine Sheldon and the elegant British wit of playwright Beverly Carlton. A three-ring circus of machinations and celebrity appearances ensues. | Sponsored by Reineke Family Dealerships

SHOUT! The Mod Musical | February 24 & 25, March 4, 2023 – 7:30 PM, March 5, 2023 – 2:00 PM, Created By Phillip George & David Lowenstein, “Mod Musings” & “Groovy Gab” by Peter Charles Morris & Phillip George, Orchestrations & Additional Arrangements by Bradley Vieth, Originally Directed Off-Broadway by Phillip George, Originally Choreographed Off-Broadway by David Lowenstein, Originally produced Off-Broadway in New York City by Victoria Lang & P.P. Piccoli and Mark Schwartz

The review follows five groovy gals as they come of age during those glorious days that made England swing. Traveling in time from 1960 to 1970, SHOUT! chronicles the dawning liberation of women, from the rise of Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark and Cilla Black as independent women with major careers, to their American counterparts, redefining themselves in the face of changing attitudes about gender. With a shimmy and shake, the songs are tied together by hilarious sound bites from the period – from ’60s advertisements to letters answered by an advice columnist who thinks that every problem can be solved with a “fetching new hair style and a new shade of lipstick.” | Sponsored by Reineke Family Dealerships

Harvey | May 6, 7 & 12, 2023 – 7:30 PM, May 13, 2023 – 2:00 PM, By Mary Chase

Harvey, a Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy by Mary Chase, is the story of a perfect gentleman, Elwood P. Dowd, and his best friend, Harvey — a pooka, who is a six-foot tall, invisible rabbit. When Elwood begins introducing Harvey around town, his embarrassed sister, Veta Louise, and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, determine to commit Elwood to a sanitarium. A mistake is made, however, and Veta is committed rather than Elwood! Eventually, the mistake is realized, and a frantic search begins for Elwood and the invisible pooka, which ends with Elwood appearing, voluntarily, at the sanitarium. In the end, however, Veta realizes that she loves her brother and his invisible his best friend just as they are, and doesn’t want either of them to change. Sponsored by Reineke Family Dealerships

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast | July 8, 9 & 16, 2023 – 7:30 PM, July 17, 2023 – 2:00 PM, Music by Alan Menken – Lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice – Book by Linda Woolverton, Originally Directed by Robert Jess Roth, Originally Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions

The classic story tells of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed into his former self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity. This “tale as old as time” is filled with spectacular costume and set opportunities or, even more simply staged, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast offers a great opportunity to bring your entire community together for family theatre at its best. Sponsored by Reineke Family Dealerships & Croghan Colonial Bank

The Tiffin Seneca Farmers’ Market is a Family Affair

Press release courtesy of Tiffin Seneca Farmers’ Market, A Function of Seneca County Common Ground

The Tiffin Seneca Farmers’ Market is a Family Affair!

When you support your local farmers market you are supporting an entire family.

When shopping at the Tiffin Seneca Farmers’ Market customers will see kids running around and playing with other farmers market children, some early teens are experiencing their first job, and families are working together to provide fresh produce baked goods and other items to be purchased at the market.

The Tiffin Seneca Farmers Market provides a kid friendly environment with children activities including market bingo and coloring sheets.  This week a Kona Ice truck will also be at the market for kids to enjoy.

Farmers markets allow families to spend time together, work together, and learn and grow together. Emily Wonder, owner of Put Your Name on It 2014 said, “ For most people Saturday mornings are relaxing and family time.  Although ours may not be relaxing, it is family time. We are a family of six that are vendors at the farmers market. Everyone of us has a job that we are expected to do to prepare for the market and at the market. Most people have to find sitters for kids when they go to work, we on the other hand take our kids with us. Helping them learn responsibility but more than anything  they are forming friendships with kids that are growing up with the same hard working background. Bryce (owner of Trigger’s Farm Market) and I have also made friends with other vendors. We help each other set up, tear down and loan items when someone forgets.  Half the time we see our “Market Family” more during the season than we do our actual extended family.”

The relationships between the vendors and the customers have grown more and more with every market. All of the vendors have been Ellen Bell, Owner of Baked by Bells said, “As a small business owner, I love having the opportunity to share the farmer’s market experience as a family. It gives us a scheduled time to work together as a team every week and learn to appreciate the hard work and skills of other crafters and growers in the community. We have also been so lucky to find a new market family with all the great friends we have made along the way.”

Many of the vendors at the farmers market also support each other and purchase products from one another. Annie Bowers, of Goat Milk Junction said, “The farmers market is a wonderful resource for natural, homegrown and homemade items. My family benefits from it all. With being a vendor that produces natural skin, hair care and pain relief, I have a vast clientele and repeat clients. Plus the community loves it due to the fact that it is accessible to our community and they don’t have to travel very far to get what they need. Fresh produce being one of those items, is a staple in many households like mine. So while I am a vendor at these markets I am also a customer.”

The farmers market is also a way for families to be created and do better for a common good. Leah Cordy, Owner of Hope’s Landing said, “The Tiffin Seneca Farmers Market gives us a place to sell our products directly to our community. All of our products are made by local survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence, so the ability to sell at this market puts money directly into survivor’s pockets. The market is also a great way to spend a Saturday morning with my family and friends, while in the heart of surrounding downtown businesses. There’s something for everyone!”

The Farmers Market also gives community members a way to get involved. Marilyn Seislove, Principal Calvert Elementary said, “I think the farmers market is a wonderful experience for the families in Tiffin. There is something for everyone, both old and young. This past week Calvert offered face painting and I think it was fabulous. The kids absolutely  loved it!! The expressions on their faces were priceless. The market provides local homegrown fruits and vegetables, handmade items, and a time to chat  with old friends. It is an opportunity that reminds me of days gone by. It is reminiscent of the way things used to be in small towns.”

This weekend be sure to bring your family out to the Tiffin Seneca Farmers’ Market for Kona Ice, activities, and to support the local families of Seneca County.
