Never Forget: Remembering 9/11 in Seneca County

As we reflect this year on the devastating event that occurred on September 11, 2001- the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the heroic actions of those aboard Flight 93, we encourage you to visit the Tiffin Police and Fire All Patriots Memorial to reflect and take part in a special ceremony marking the 24th anniversary of that day.

This Thursday, September 11, at 8:46 a.m.- the exact time the first World Trade Center was hit, community members are invited to join local first responders, veterans, and officials in a time of reflection upon this solemn event that forever changed our country. A wreath laying, a rifle salute, and the playing of taps to honor all those who lost their lives for the protection of our people will take place at this ceremony.

During the ceremony, the American Flag donated by Tiffin native Richard Martin will be placed and flown until sunset as a reminder of the strength our country has had and still has to this day during such a tragic event to our nation.

The All Patriots Memorial, located at Washington and Water streets, near downtown Tiffin, serves as a reminder of the events of September 11, 2001. Featuring a beam from the World Trade Center, the memorial honors the attacks and commemorates the Tiffin’s police and firefighters who died in the line of duty. Local police, firefighters, and community members raised $375,000 to create the memorial, which was dedicated on September 9, 2012.

As you visit the memorial, take time to notice its symbolic features. The 17.5-foot, three-ton beam rests at a 9.11-degree angle atop a pentagon-shaped base, representing the attack on the Pentagon. The beam features an “M-18” inscription, the investigator’s identification number, along with the words “Never Forget” etched across the monument. Names of Tiffin fallen police and firefighters are written as well to remember those who put their lives on the line for our community.

Behind the monument stands a Callery pear tree, a tribute to the Survivor Tree from Ground Zero, reduced from the wreckage and later replanted at the new World Trade Center site. Nearby, a 40-inch-tall post honors the Flight 93 passengers, all 40, each inch representing each passenger and crew member who died in the crash in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In addition, a nearby grass mound symbolizes the crash site of the plane.

The All Patriots Memorial serves as a place of remembrance, reflection, and education. It keeps the events of September 11, 2001, alive in our community and honors all local police and firefighters who have and continue to protect our community. The monument flies the United States Flag, the National Fallen Police Flag, and the National Fallen Firefighters Flag. The site is regularly used for memorial services during both local and national tragedies.

We invite you to join us on September 11 to honor those who sacrificed their lives, reflect on the tragic events of 9/11, and ensure that we Never Forget.

On the Right Track: Discovering Fostoria’s Rail Experience

Seneca County’s Seasons & Stories – Monthly Blog | July 2025

Each month, we bring you stories and inspiration shaped by what makes that time of year special in Seneca County. From seasonal events and local traditions to unique places and hidden gems, our themes highlight what’s most relevant to the month.

This July, we’re headed down a track of a different kind—a steel one—to celebrate a place where summer sounds like a distant horn and the thunder of trains shakes the earth. Welcome to Fostoria’s Iron Triangle Rail Park, where engines roll and stories unfold.

In 2013, the City of Fostoria transformed a unique geographical advantage into a haven for train lovers from around the world. The result? A 5.6-acre park nestled at the epicenter of three intersecting double-track rail lines, creating what’s known as the Iron Triangle.

It’s not just a nickname—it’s a spectacle. On any given day, more than 100 trains rumble through this tight corridor. From sunrise to well past sunset (and every hour in between), you’ll see freight cars loaded with goods speeding past in synchronized rhythm. Trains don’t sleep, and neither does this park—open 24/7, just like the railroads it celebrates.

The Iron Triangle gets its name from the three major mainlines that crisscross through town:

  • CSX, operating the former Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) line (east-west) and Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) line (north-south),

  • Norfolk Southern, formerly the Nickel Plate Railroad, completing the triangle with an additional east-west line.

This junction isn’t just a pretty map feature—it’s a logistical marvel. Railroads here are so active, enthusiasts call it the “I-75 of the rails.” Thanks to efficient connections and transfer lines, trains can shift directions and routes with ease. It’s a ballet of steel and signal lights that railfans travel the world to see.

Believe it or not, people plan entire vacations around this park. Just last month, Mark Shelley of England made his annual two-week pilgrimage to Fostoria, joined by friends from New Hampshire, Alabama, and Arcadia, Ohio. On another visit, travelers from Australia and Austria were spotted sharing stories and swapping train schedules.

Many choose to camp out right at the Rail Park, RVs parked beside the tracks, watching trains pass day and night. There’s no fee to stay, and soon, two 30-amp electric hookups will be installed—completely free to use (though reservations are a smart move—just call the Mayor’s Administrative Assistant to claim a spot).

Nearby, hotels in Fostoria and Tiffin offer even more lodging options, perfect for weekenders or full-blown rail excursions.

The excitement surrounding this attraction isn’t just for summer, it’s all an season experience. This September, Fostoria will host the 23rd Annual Fostoria Rail Festival, a one-day celebration of everything trains. Held at the Fostoria Jr/Sr High School, the event features vendors, memorabilia, and elaborate model train layouts that fill entire gyms. Around 1,000 visitors attend each year, spending the day between the festival and the Rail Park itself. Whether you’re a die-hard enthusiast or a curious newcomer, there’s no better way to experience the community and culture of railroading.

The Iron Triangle isn’t just about trains—it’s about connection. It’s where past meets present, where history is heard in the hum of engines, and where strangers become friends over shared fascination. You can learn more here about the Iron Triangle Rail Park and the Fostoria Rail Preservation Society.

So this July, take a detour. Follow the tracks to Fostoria. You might arrive a visitor—but you’ll leave with a story.

Handshoe Cakes & Cookies: Sweets Made with Heart

A Humble Beginning

In the heart of Seneca County, Ohio, nestled in the town of Republic, is a beloved Ohio stop for sweet treats, customized cakes, and even farm-fresh chicken and duck eggs sourced locally. In addition to sweet delights, the shop features charming boutique items from other small businesses, making it a one-stop destination for thoughtful gifts, delicious treats, and locally crafted goods.

Lisa’s journey into the world of baking wasn’t paved with formal culinary training or generational recipes. Instead, it began with a simple desire: to stay home with her children. Armed with determination, she enrolled in baking classes at local craft shops and immersed herself in episodes of “The Great British Bake Off,” learning the nuances of baking from scratch. Her initial foray into baking was marked by endearing missteps—like the time she intended to purchase a cake pan but returned home with a cookie sheet instead.

From these modest beginnings in 1999, Lisa’s passion blossomed. What started as baking 2-3 cakes a week alongside a babysitting business evolved into a full-time endeavor. Today, during peak seasons, she crafts over 18 cakes daily and produces up to 500 dozen cut-out cookies during the holidays.

Building a Community, One Cookie at a Time

Lisa’s commitment to her community is as rich as her buttercream frosting. In 2020, she expanded her home-based business into a storefront, investing $25,000 to create a space that not only offers delectable treats but also showcases products from local artisans and entrepreneurs.

Handshoe Cakes & Cookies isn’t just a bakery; it’s a community hub. Lisa frequently participates in local events and is always a supportive donor when asked to give back. Her generosity and community involvement have solidified her reputation as a beloved local entrepreneur.

Cookies from Home: A Taste of Comfort for Troops Abroad

Perhaps one of Lisa’s most heartfelt initiatives is “Project Cookies from Home.” What began as a small gesture transformed into a monumental effort to provide deployed U.S. military personnel with a taste of home. After accidentally ordering 500 shipping boxes instead of 25, Lisa embraced the challenge, sending over 70,000 cookies to service members worldwide. People can share any APO, FPO or DPO overseas addresses with Lisa and Handshoe Cakes & Cookies will send cookies to the loved one’s whole unit!

Each $25 box, sponsored by generous donors, is filled with homemade cookies and accompanied by letters of encouragement or colorful drawings from the community. This initiative not only boosts the morale of our troops but also fosters a sense of unity and gratitude within Seneca County.

Support Local, Taste the Love

At Handshoe Cakes & Cookies, customization is key. Lisa prides herself on crafting confections tailored to her clients’ visions. Whether it’s a corporate event, a family celebration, or a unique business promotion, she collaborates closely with customers to bring their ideas to life. Her offerings include gluten-free, sugar-free, and vegan options, ensuring that everyone can indulge in her delightful creations.

In an era where mass-produced goods dominate, Handshoe Cakes & Cookies stands as a beacon of authenticity and community spirit. Lisa’s unwavering dedication, from her humble beginnings to her expansive community outreach, exemplifies the profound impact of local businesses.

So, the next time you’re craving a sweet treat or seeking the perfect cake for a special occasion, take a visit to Handshoe Cakes & Cookies at 6085 E State Route 18, Republic, OH. Experience firsthand the warmth, love, and delectable flavors that have made Lisa Handshoe a cherished figure in Seneca County.

Each month, we bring you stories and inspiration shaped by what makes that time of year special in Seneca County. From seasonal events and local traditions to unique places and hidden gems, our themes highlight what’s most relevant to the month. See the recap video here to relive all the fun!

This April, we’re celebrating one of the most unforgettable chapters in our story — the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse. A year later, the sky-high excitement and community pride are still shining bright. On April 8, 2024, the sky darkened, the stars appeared, and Seneca County witnessed a moment of cosmic wonder. Under the theme Solar Eclipse of the Heart: Love Your Time in Totality, our community welcomed visitors from near and far to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event — and we made it one to remember.

Out of the Dark Glow 5K & Fun Run

The Out of the Dark Glow 5K & Fun Run, sponsored by Mercy Health, kicked off the festivities on April 6, 2024. More than 270 runners from 10 different states lit up Tiffin with glow sticks, neon gear, and unstoppable energy. The night race raised $6,000 for the Tiffin Community YMCA Backpack Program, helping local children head back to school prepared for success.

It wasn’t just a race — it was a glowing symbol of how we come together for a cause.

Eclipse Business Bingo

Leading up to the eclipse, visitors explored Tiffin, Fostoria, and beyond with Eclipse Business Bingo. Shops, restaurants, and local businesses offered exclusive eclipse deals and offerings — from tote bags and glass creations to ornaments, t-shirts, jewelry, and more.

It was a fun and creative way to celebrate and support local entrepreneurship — getting decked out for the eclipse from head to toe and picking up mementos to remember this special moment forever.

A Community Concert to Remember

The evening before totality, hundreds gathered at Frost-Kalnow Amphitheater on the East Green for a free community concert sponsored by Destination Seneca County and Eclipse Window Tinting. Families and friends filled the lawn, enjoying live music from fan-favorite Wally and The Beavs as anticipation for the big day grew.

It was a powerful reminder of what makes Seneca County special — a community that gathers, celebrates, and lifts each other up.

Elope at the Eclipse: A National Spotlight Shining on Seneca County

In one of the most heartwarming events of the weekend, 120 couples from 11 different states traveled over 12,000 miles combined to say “I do” or “I do again” by renewing their vows under the shadow of the moon. The event exceeded our expectations and we wanted to guarantee a smooth, memorable, and fun experience for all the couples. Coupled event received a Eclipse Guide and a walk through video on what to expect the day of.  Elope at the Eclipse received over 100 national media mentions, putting Seneca County in the spotlight for its creativity, hospitality, and love. These couples were invited back this past weekend for the “Eclipse Ever After” Anniversary Celebration. We are so fortunate to have Seneca County written into the love stories of couples from across the country.

A Recognized Success

The Solar Eclipse crossed 13 states, over 200 counties, and the path of 31 million residents — so why did so many choose Seneca County?

Major brands like Oreo, Krispy Kreme, Jeni’s Ice Cream, Princess Cruises, Delta Airlines, and many more tied their national eclipse campaigns to this historic event. Seneca County was proudly listed among the nation’s eclipse success stories and recognized for our planning, creativity, and impact.

The 2024 Solar Eclipse even became a case study in the academic publication “Success Stories: Solar Eclipse Brand Campaigns, Events, and Products: Early Planning, Collaboration, and the Role of Social Media — A Model for Future Event Success and Lessons Learned from Eclipse 2024” researched and written by Danielle C. Foster and David M. Savino of Ohio Northern University. The report states: “One of the most notable nationally covered, well-planned, and executed events occurred in a small town in northwest Ohio called Tiffin.”

Love Your Time in Totality — and Beyond

One year later, the memories are as bright as ever. From runners glowing in the dark to couples beginning their forever under a once-in-a-lifetime sky, Seneca County proved that when the stars align, amazing things happen. And while the eclipse has passed, the spirit of connection, celebration, and community shines on in every story we tell, every mile traveled, and every heart touched.

Here’s to the memories we made and the many more yet to come. See the recap video here to relive all the fun!

From Risdon and Rome to the Rails: The Birth of Fostoria and Its Railroad Legacy

Press release courtesy of Ellen Gatrell, Fostoria Rail Preservation Society.

Did you know that Fostoria was dedicated on July 14, 1854? The two villages of Risdon and Rome were combined to form Fostoria. Rome was a village between the streets of South, Poplar, North & Wood. Risdon was the village located in the area of Countyline & Summit Streets where today you can see the Ohio Historical marker noting Risdon Square. Summit Street was the Main Street of Risdon. Risdon boundaries were Liberty, Van Buren, Parkway, Jackson and one alley west of Union Street. These two villages were platted in 1832. Fostoria was named after Charles W. Foster as he was able to negotiate a truce to combine both villages into one city.

Growth in the United States could be achieved by having railroads lay track through your city. Fostoria’s “movers & shakers” wanted Fostoria to prosper and they did whatever they could to convince the railroads of the time to lay tracks through Fostoria. In the early 1850’s the first railroad in Fostoria was the Fremont & Indiana. As noted in the original name, the railroad traveled from Fremont to Indiana. This railroad had financial issues with ownership changing constantly. Numerous names were Fremont, Lima and Union Railroad Company, Lake Erie & Pacific Railroad Company (1865), and Lake Erie & Louisville Railroad Company and eventually the Lake Erie & Western Railroad. This railroad was used often by people traveling from Indiana to Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio. The first depot was located on the NE corner of Sandusky & Main Streets, where Candyland Restaurant was located. In 1878, Lake Erie & Western built the present-day depot at 128 W. North Street for a cost of $850.00. In the 1980’s, many Fostorians remember the Camp Fire organization being in the depot. In 2007 the Fostoria Rail Preservation Society (FRPS) received a grant from the Henry H. Geary Jr. Memorial Foundation to purchase the building from the Camp Fire organization. The depot has been updated with a new roof, exterior & interior repainted, air conditioning installed and new exterior & interior lighting. Santa at the Depot has been held in the LE&W Depot for the past sixteen years.

The New York Central System laid track through Fostoria in the 1850’s. Eventually the NYC became Penn Central, and then Conrail. Conrail was split between CSX & Norfolk-Southern. The Toledo & Ohio Central laid track in the 1860’s and eventually became part of the NYC. Hocking Valley laid track through Fostoria in 1872 and this railroad eventually became the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O), later Chessie System and is now owned by CSX. The Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) laid track through Fostoria in 1873. This railroad eventually became the Chessie System, along with the Chesapeake & Ohio, and later CSX. The New York, Chicago and St. Louis, or the Nickel Plate Railroad, ran track through Fostoria in the 1880’s. The Nickel Plate Railroad eventually became Norfolk & Western and later Norfolk-Southern.

Interurbans or electric car trolleys were also an affordable mode of transportation. These electric railroad lines were in existence in this area from 1898-1932. They were the Toledo, Fostoria & Findlay Railway Company (TF&F), Tiffin, Fostoria & Eastern (TF&E) and the Fostoria & Fremont was part of the Lake Shore Electric. Henry Ford’s affordable automobiles changed transportation for middle class families. The trolleys were phased out as the family automobiles became more popular. Trolleys traveled seven days a week.

This is the first in a series of Fostoria railroad history articles. Thank you for reading.

Luck, Legacy, and the Irish Spirit of Seneca County

Seneca County’s Seasons & Stories – Monthly Blog | March 2025

Each month, we bring you stories and inspiration shaped by what makes that time of year special in Seneca County. From seasonal events and local traditions to unique places and hidden gems, our themes highlight what’s most relevant to the month.

Luck, Legacy, and the Irish Spirit of Seneca County

How lucky are we to be in Seneca County! From the early 19th century, Irish immigrants left their homeland in search of new opportunities in America. Many found a new home right here in Seneca County, where they built churches, businesses, and communities that still echo their legacy today.

Faith and Foundations

For the Irish of Seneca County, faith was a cornerstone of their community. The first Catholic church in Tiffin, St. Mary’s, was established in the 1830s, quickly becoming known as the “Irish church.” As German Catholic immigrants arrived, they formed their own congregation, leading to the creation of St. Joseph’s Church in the 1840s. Yet, St. Mary’s remained the heart of Tiffin’s Irish community for generations.

One of the most remarkable figures in the early years of St. Mary’s was Father Michael O’Sullivan, an Irish-born priest from County Kerry. Arriving in Tiffin in 1852, he courageously served during the 1853 cholera epidemic, even rescuing an infant from the bed of his deceased mother. His leadership left a lasting impression, and he was instrumental in building the second St. Mary’s Church before his transfer to Urbana in 1859.

Meanwhile, in Bascom, Ohio, Irish and German settlers sought a place of worship closer to home. In 1863, they founded St. Patrick’s Church on Bullfrog Road. Though it was destroyed by fire in 1913, the resilient parishioners rebuilt it in Bascom, where it remained in use until 2018. In October 2023, the church was demolished as part of the Ohio Demolition and Site Revitalization Program. The site will soon be home to Tiell Financial Group headquarters, continuing the community’s legacy of growth and reinvestment.

Irish Influence in Business and Leadership

Beyond their churches, Irish immigrants shaped Tiffin’s neighborhoods, businesses, and civic life. William Sullivan, a prominent businessman, arrived in Tiffin around 1825 and established a successful hardware store. His Irish heritage ran deep—he was even elected as a senator in the Fenian Brotherhood, advocating for Irish independence. Another entrepreneur, Ed Sullivan, opened “The Irish Store” in 1851. After his passing, his wife, Sarah, successfully ran the business for years, showcasing the resilience of Seneca County’s Irish families.

Irish-born clergy also played a key role in shaping the local community. Father Thomas Conlon, born to Irish parents, became the pastor of St. Mary’s in 1904, overseeing the construction of the magnificent church on Sandusky Street that still stands today.

Irish Sons on the National Stage

Not all of Seneca County’s Irish descendants stayed close to home. Paul Maloy, a Bascom native, made it to the Boston Red Sox in 1913, proudly carrying his Irish heritage onto the national stage. Meanwhile, Thomas O’Conner, originally from County Kerry, grew up in Tiffin before becoming a successful businessman and senator in Missouri. His estate funded charitable projects in both Missouri and Ohio, including contributions to St. Mary’s Church and various Tiffin institutions.

Irish Craftsmanship: Hawkes Crystal

The tradition of brilliant cut crystal has deep Irish roots, a legacy proudly continued by Hawkes Crystal in Tiffin. Thomas Gibbons Hawkes, born in County Cork, Ireland, established T.G. Hawkes & Company in New York in 1890, earning international acclaim. Today, Master Brilliant Cutter Aidan J. Scully, also a native of County Cork, carries on the tradition at Hawkes Crystal Workshop and Gallery in downtown Tiffin. Visitors can witness the intricate process of crystal cutting firsthand, appreciating this timeless craft.

A Place of Gratitude, Accomplishment, and Luck

While much has changed in Seneca County, the Irish influence remains woven into the fabric of the community. The Irish are known for their belief in luck, and in Seneca County, that luck is found in unexpected places. At Tiffin University, stepping on the dragon in the weight room brings bad luck and results in the stepper having to do push-ups. Across the river at Heidelberg University, new students take part in the T-Bridge tradition, where they either toss their lucky penny into Rock Creek or keep it forever as a symbol of either love or money. Whichever path they choose, good fortune follows for them at the university by participating in the tradition.

The stained-glass window of St. Patrick in St. Mary’s Church stands as a reminder of faith and perseverance, while Hawkes Crystal continues a legacy of craftsmanship, and establishments like the Clover Club pay homage to the community’s strong Irish roots. Whether in churches, businesses, sports, or the arts, the Irish have left an indelible mark on Seneca County. The community leans into the luck of the irish and the fun of the season with events and promotions such as the Downtown Tiffin St. Paddy’s Day 5k, the St. Mary’s Irish Reverse Raffle, the Tiffin Elks St. Patrick’s Day Beer & Food Truck Festival, special t-shirts, themed accessories, green beer offerings across the county, and so much more!

Even if you’re not of Irish heritage, you can’t help but feel lucky in Seneca County. We are thankful for the roots that built a strong community, one that instills a sense of gratitude, accomplishment, and, yes—a little luck—in all who live, learn, visit, and play here.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all who celebrate, and if you’re seeking some luck, Seek Seneca County!

A Sweet Tradition: Snavely’s Sugar Shack Maple Fest Returns March 9

For more than 150 years, the Snavely family has been perfecting the craft of maple syrup making, passing down their knowledge and passion through six generations—and counting. Each season, as winter fades and the first hints of spring begin to stir, the woods surrounding their Republic, Ohio sugar camp come alive with a time-honored tradition: tapping trees, collecting sap, and carefully boiling it down into pure, golden maple syrup.

That same tradition will be on full display once again at Snavely’s Sugar Shack Maple Fest, returning Sunday, March 9, from 10 AM to 2 PM at 9404 East Township Road 138, Republic, OH.

From Tree to Table: The Magic of Maple Syrup

Making maple syrup is a labor of love, a delicate process that “boils down to” evaporating the water from sap until the natural sugars concentrate to create the rich, sweet syrup so many know and love. At Snavely’s Sugar Shack, this process has evolved over the years—what started with wood-fired evaporators has now shifted to a fuel oil-fired system and reverse osmosis to remove as much water as possible before boiling.

Yet, some things remain the same. The family still collects sap using spiles and buckets, a tradition dating back to their earliest days of syrup-making. Today, with nearly 7,000 taps in place, including sap collected from neighboring farms, the operation continues to grow while staying rooted in its heritage.

Maple Fest: A Celebration of Community and Tradition

The first Maple Fest was held in 1993, a small gathering that welcomed about 300 brave visitors willing to face the cold to witness the syrup-making process. Over the years, the event has grown, with attendance now reaching close to 800 people, thanks to the hard work of family, friends, and the local community.

A highlight of the festival is the all-you-can-eat breakfast, a meal that pairs freshly made pancakes, pork sausage, and soft-serve ice cream with warm, pure maple syrup straight from the source. The meal is prepared and served by local Masonic groups including Seneca Lodge #790 and the Eastern Stars, ensuring that visitors not only enjoy a delicious breakfast but also support local organizations in the process.

After breakfast, guests are invited to hop on a free hayride back to the Sugar Camp, where they can see the syrup-making process in action, from the collection of sap to its transformation into the sweet treat that has made Snavely’s Sugar Shack a local favorite. Maple products will also be available for purchase at the event.

Join the Tradition

Attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather, as parts of the event take place outdoors. The cost for breakfast is $13 for adults, $8 for children ages 5-11, and free for children 4 and under.

For those looking to experience a true taste of Ohio’s maple syrup tradition, Snavely’s Sugar Shack Maple Fest is the perfect opportunity to get outside, learn something new, and enjoy a day filled with good food, good company, and the unmistakable taste of real maple syrup.

For more details and updates, follow Snavely’s Sugar Shack on Facebook.
