Attica’s Autumn Village Day

Press release courtesy of the Attica Events Committee.

If you don’t have plans for Saturday, September 30th, The Attica Event Committee invites you to attend the FIRST Attica Autumn Day from 10 am – 4 pm. In late July, a few of us decided that we wanted to make Attica the hometown we can all be proud of, and to bring the feeling of community back to the village, we created Attica Autumn Day. Working with the Attica Sons of the Legion, who will be hosting their Second Annual Car and Truck Show at the Attica Fairgrounds, there will surely be something for everyone.

The Vendor Fair, located in downtown Attica, will have several vendors with a variety of items that we are sure will be perfect no matter what you’re looking for. The Seneca East Public Library will host kids’ games and crafts and sell fresh baked bread and books. Food trucks will be set up throughout the event to get something tasty to eat, as well as Smitty’s Pizza.

The Sons of the Legion will be providing shuttles to and from the Fairgrounds to downtown Attica from 12 – 4 pm so that everyone can take part in the Car and Truck Show and visit Attica’s Veterans Memorial as well as the Vendor Fair. There will also be additional food trucks at the Fairgrounds to ensure no one goes home hungry.

As the event closes, we are excited to provide an opportunity for everyone to come together for the First Community Square Dance from 3 – 6 pm. The event will be held Downtown by the Village Offices. During the square dance, there will be fellowship, music, laughs, and maybe even some great and unexpected dance moves.

The Attica Community Church is sponsoring Smitty’s Ice Cream Cart for FREE ice cream for those who attend.

We are excited about our first event and are thrilled that our community is coming together to do great things.

So please join us on this fabulous fall day, take in the fall decorations, do some shopping, stop at our photo area for the perfect fall photo, cruise through the car and truck show, spend some time at the Veterans Memorial, and admire the amazing work honoring those we have lost fighting for our freedom, and end the night with squaring dancing and ice cream.

It will for sure be the PERFECT Autumn Day!

Please feel free to visit our Facebook Page, Attica Events Committee, to get more information about our Vendors and what they will have to offer. We hope to see you there!

Third Thursday Trick-or-Treat & Great Pumpkin Drop

Downtown Tiffin is gearing up to host its annual Downtown Trick or Treat – Third Thursday on October 19th starting at 4:30 pm. Participating Downtown merchants will be passing out candy and treats to young trick-or-treaters. Costumes are not only welcomed but encouraged.

One exciting addition to this year’s celebration is “The Great Pumpkin Drop,” which will be conducted by the Tiffin Fire/Rescue Division at 6:30 pm in City Lot 6. Fire Chief Chappell expresses his enthusiasm, saying, “The Tiffin Fire/Rescue Division is excited to be a part of the first-ever Pumpkin Drop Downtown Tiffin event! Watching the annual Downtown Trick or Treat grow each year, we wanted to do something to make it even better. Dropping pumpkins from up to 100 feet above the ground seemed like an exciting way to conclude the afternoon’s events. We look forward to seeing a great turnout!”

Students from Vanguard-Sentinel Career and Technology Centers-Sentinel campus will pre-decorate 12 pumpkins to be dropped. During the 3rd Thursday event, the pumpkins will be on display in City Lot 6 where the community will have an opportunity to donate/sponsor each pumpkin. The funds generated will help support the SkillsUSA program for the students.

In addition to the Trick-or-Treat and Pumpkin Drop, the annual Downtown merchant Halloween window decorating contest will take place on October 19th. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the fun by casting their votes via QR code at each participating location.

We can’t wait to see the streets of downtown packed with people, costumes, candy, and fun for all! See you there!

Courses Worth Putting | Putt Putt Course Contest Announced

The Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival, in partnership with the Tiffin-Seneca United Way and JAM’s Monthly Markets, has announced the launch of the Heritage Festival Putt-Putt Course Contest to take place during festival weekend on September 16, 2023 from 11 AM – 4 PM and September 17, 2023 from 10 AM – 3 PM. The course will be located in the green space areas surrounding Calvert High School. Money raised from the courses being played will go directly back to the Tiffin-Seneca United Way into the general campaign fund.

The Putt-Putt course existed many years ago during previous Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festivals and the committee decided it was time to bring it back for the festival and for a good cause. The 9-hole course has been split into three sections, 3 holes per section, that will be given to local student groups to decorate, clean up, and used to recruit players during the festival weekend. Groups participating include the Tiffin Columbian Key Club, Hopewell-Loudon FFA, and New Riegel FFA. The groups will be competing against one another to see who can raise the most money from their course section. Each course will be $2 to play, please cash only, with putters and balls provided by Mohawk Golf and Country Club. Supporters may play more than one course and may also play a course more than once. First, Second, and Third Place prize packs will be given to the participating groups depending on how they finish at the end of the weekend. Prize packs have been graciously sponsored by Rise FM, MC Insurance, the Seneca County Young Professionals, and JAM’s Monthly Markets.

The Putt-Putt Course Contest adds another level of fun as part of the Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival while also giving back to the organizations and youth of the community. The Tiffin-Seneca United Way will officially be kicking off the 2024 Campaign Season on Saturday, September 16, 2023. The Course Contest is meant to jumpstart and raise awareness about the campaign.

Jami Fadley, owner of JAM’s Monthly Markets and Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival Board of Trustees member, states, “When the putt-putt course was discovered in storage from long ago, it was a no brainer that we could use it to give back to the community. With the campaign kicking off for the United Way that same weekend, we are excited to see the success and support the course contest will receive. Having the youth organizations that are working on the course sections able to raise money for their own specific groups is a huge bonus and has really bought them into the project.” All are welcome to play and thank you for your support in advance.

Tiffin’s Mayor, Dawn Iannantuono, is thrilled about the upcoming event and enthusiastically expresses her support, stating, “The Taste of Downtown Tiffin event is a great way to find your favorite flavors within our city! Much like the culinary minds that create these dishes, you’ll find some sweet, some a little salty, and some even a little spicy. There is something for everyone, come join in the fun!”

Tickets for the Taste of Downtown Tiffin are available for purchase at either the event itself or in advance at Pan Yan Bookstore, a pack of 5 tickets for $5 and a pack of 20 tickets for $20. Most items are priced between 1-3 tickets, giving attendees an opportunity to taste different items without committing to a whole meal.

During 3rd Thursday, TMAC – Tiffin Municipal Arts Commission will host the Court Street Market, featuring a display of local artists, makers, and crafters showcasing their handmade products. Adjacent to the Taste of Downtown Tiffin, the Tiffin Park & Recreation Department will present its annual “Band Bash” at the Frost-Kalnow Amphitheater on the East Green from 7pm to 9pm. This concert will highlight the musical talents of local university and high school marching bands, including Heidelberg University, Tiffin University, Columbian High School, and New Riegel High School.

Third Thursdays are proudly sponsored by Reineke Family Dealerships, UIS Insurance & Investments, and Destination Seneca County.

Commissioners Unveil Bicentennial Logo and Approve Funds for Celebrations in 2024

Press release courtesy of Seneca County Commissioners.

The Seneca County Commissioners, in collaboration with the Seneca County Bicentennial Committee, were thrilled to announce the unveiling of the official Bicentennial logo during Thursday morning’s board session. The logo, featuring an hourglass, symbolizes the theme “standing the test of time,” reflecting the community’s enduring spirit and love for Seneca County.

Seneca County, officially organized on April 1, 1824, is approaching its historic 200th birthday, and the Bicentennial Committee has been diligently planning events to commemorate this significant milestone. Members of the committee, including Seneca County Museum Director Theresa Sullivan and Marisa Stephens from Destination Seneca County, were inspired by the hourglass symbol being used in ads of local businesses in newspapers during the sesquicentennial and decided to incorporate this into the Bicentennial logo.

“We want all of Seneca County to come together to celebrate and promote our community during this momentous occasion,” said Theresa Sullivan, Director of the Seneca County Museum. “The Bicentennial presents an excellent opportunity to collaborate and combine events with people and organizations from across the county.”

The Bicentennial Committee envisions hosting village festivals and events throughout the county as perfect opportunities to celebrate the community’s 200th anniversary. An exciting lineup of events is being planned, including a kickoff event on April 1st, 2024, at the Seneca County Justice Center, featuring distinguished speakers and proclamations from local governments.

To support the celebrations, the commissioners allocated $10,000 in funding Thursday morning. These funds will be used for marketing, supplies and events. Additionally, a special fund will be created to assist villages, townships, businesses and other organizations in making their events Bicentennial themed. Those interested in applying for funding can find more information through the application available at Destination Seneca County.

“We encourage all our citizens to join in and add a Bicentennial flair to their traditional events next year,” said Marisa Stephens of Destination Seneca County. “We want to create a sense of community for everyone and celebrate our shared history.”

A driving tour is also being organized, showcasing historically significant sites across the county. Dr. Roy Zinn, a member of the Bicentennial Committee, revealed details of the “Historic Secrets of Seneca County Driving Tour,” allowing community members to visit sites in each of the county’s 15 townships and learn more about the county’s rich history.

Additionally, the Tiffin Community Foundation plans to offer grant funding opportunities to community organizations and local governments seeking support for their Bicentennial-themed events.

In addition to the county’s Bicentennial celebrations, Destination Seneca County officials are preparing for the rare total solar eclipse that will grace the region on April 8th, 2024. Seneca County will be in the path of totality, with the centerline passing directly over Bloomville. The last total solar eclipse visible in Ohio was in 1806. This once-in-a-lifetime event presents a unique and spectacular opportunity for residents and visitors alike to witness the awe-inspiring phenomenon.

“Join us as we come together to celebrate the rich history and vibrant future of Seneca County during the Bicentennial,” said Commissioner Tyler Shuff.

Seneca County’s Newest Mural Blooms at Wolf Creek

Seneca County’s newest mural has bloomed! This beautiful work is located at Wolf Creek Shopping Plaza, 2451 West Market Street in Tiffin, on the end of the building on the outside wall of the Edward Jones- Chris Lee office space. Wolf Creek Shopping Plaza is home to many local businesses including Jeffrey Jewelry, Threads, Rose Leaf Flowers, Neumeister’s Candy Shoppe, Tangles Salon, and many more! While these local businesses bring Seneca County residents and visitors to their storefronts, this new mural will add another reason for everyone to make their way to Wolf Creek and to Seneca County. From photo sessions to the perfect Instagrammable background for any occasion to just taking in its beauty, we are so happy to have the arts alive and well in our community with this new piece. What makes this even more special is that the mural was done by the hands of Tiffin’s very own Claudia Riedy. It is through passion, collaboration, and determination that projects like this one can come to fruition!

Please enjoy the official artist statement from Claudia:

“Let me start by saying this is a dream come true for a lot of reasons. The short version is that I love public art and I love our community, and I was thrilled for an opportunity to work with a local business to create something that years ago I would have not had the confidence to do (really, I was actually asked a few years back and I declined for that very reason). Some people may not see the value of having some giant flowers painted on the side of a building, but I want to share why I think it is important.

We live in an uncomfortably fast paced world. I can personally attest that I am always in a rush, always anticipating what’s next, and rarely living in the moment. I think a staggering amount of people live in that state too. In regard to my experience working on this project, I cannot think of a more cliche saying to reference than “stop and smell the roses”, but that is truly what I witnessed countless people doing over these past few weeks. I’m unsure of all of the different reasons that brought people around the corner of the building each day, but as I’ve painted, I’ve watched so many unassuming people stop whatever they were doing, even for just a brief moment, to appreciate art. Some people have simply stopped and smiled, some people have rolled down their windows to chat and take photos. I’ve had people share thoughts about their own artistic interests, or about great art they’ve seen in other communities, and I’ve even have had several people tell me how something in my artwork reminded them of a loved one who passed. I’ve had people from out of town stop their travels to get a picture, even though they will never actually see it finished, while I’ve had other people make it a regular stop during their week to see the progress. People of different ages, ethnicities, backgrounds, and beliefs, all pausing whatever they were doing to appreciate art with a total stranger (which half the time turned into a realization that we actually knew of one another because that’s how small towns are). Art has an immeasurable power to make us pause, reflect, and connect. We often take it for granted.

I’ve been drawn to art for my whole life, but when I started to seriously consider it as more than a hobby, I recall people constantly asking where I planned to go to pursue this passion, as if the immediate assumption was that I had to leave Tiffin to feel successful or supported as an artist. I really never felt compelled to leave – why would I go somewhere else when there is need right here? There is something indescribably special about changing the landscape of something you have known your whole life, whether it be a physical change like painting an otherwise ordinary wall, or something potentially even more profound, like cultivating relationships, sharing visions, and seeing them actually come to fruition with other members of the community. Yes, I know that the world outside of our small town has so much to offer and see, but I can’t help but feel excited about all of the ways the world outside can inspire opportunities here too.

I am passionate about the arts. But passion isn’t limited to just artistic endeavors. Our town is full of people who are passionate about all sorts of things. This building itself is home to many people who are so passionate about something, that they pursued it and turned it into a small business. And the best thing they have in common is that they too, decided to stay and share that passion here with us. When you come around the corner in the future, I invite you not only to stop and smell the roses – get out of your car, check out the artwork, have a whole photoshoot – but, also stop and support the local businesses here who have just as much beauty to share with you.”

Thank you to Claudia for sharing her talents and to everyone who made this project possible. Go check out these beautiful blooms today!

Heritage Festival Parade Set for September 16

Destination Seneca County has announced that the Heritage Festival Parade, sponsored by Brian Bower – loanDepot, will take place on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 10 AM in downtown Tiffin. The parade will take place during Heritage Festival weekend that kicks off Friday, September 15 and runs through Sunday, September 17. The theme of this year’s parade is, “Honoring Yesterday’s Pioneers, Celebrating Today’s Heroes”, with Connor Whaley serving as the Grand Marshall of the parade.

In February of 2021, at the age of three, Connor was going to multiple doctor visits for seemingly unrelated issues. He didn’t want to eat, had trouble sleeping and was very irritable. He had intermittent fevers as high as 104.5 degrees, yet all his tests would come back negative. His parents were stumped, but after three weeks of symptoms, on March 12, they requested bloodwork. They were told multiple times it wasn’t necessary, but they kept pushing, and it was good they did. Within a half hour of bloodwork, they were told to pack a bag and get to Nationwide Hospital as soon as possible. Bloodwork, plus a bone marrow biopsy, confirmed their son, Connor, had B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

In May 2023, Connor rang the bell after nearly 800 days of intensive treatment. At this year’s parade Destination Seneca County will honor Connor and the thousands of children and families that are impacted across the country as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Children and families that have been impacted by Childhood Cancer are asked to sign up to walk along Connor in the parade at www.DestinationSenecaCounty.org/Parade.

The Heritage Festival Parade route will begin on South Washington Street at St. Joseph Catholic Church and go through the intersection at Riverside Drive. The parade will begin promptly at 10 am. All are welcome to participate in the parade and can register at www.DestinationSenecaCounty.org/Parade. Parade participants are asked to be registered no later than September 8, 2023.

Chicago Transit | The Best of Chicago

Saturday, March 9, 2024 | 7:30pm – There are a lot of bands doing a tribute to the band Chicago, but back in the early ‘90s, when Powerhouse decided to put together their Chicago Transit tribute act, they were the first in the world to do so.  And they remain today as the longest running Chicago tribute band and the only one to carry four lead vocalists, just as the band Chicago does. The band, with its 3 piece horn section, five piece rhythm section and four lead vocalists is able to cover all the Chicago material from the early horn-dominant classics like ‘Make Me Smile’, ’25 or 6 to 4’ and ‘Saturday in the Park’ to the later, softer, keyboard-oriented ballads like ‘If You Leave Me Now’.

Here Comes the Mummies

Friday, March 22, 2024 | 7:30 PM – Back by popular demand, Here Come the Mummies is an eight-piece funk-rock band of 5,000 year-old Egyptian Mummies with a one-track mind. Their “Terrifying Funk from Beyond the Grave” is sure to get you into them (and possibly vice versa). Since their discovery, HCTM has opened for P-Funk, Al Green, and Cheap Trick; rocked Super Bowl Village; become a regular on The Bob and Tom Show; been invited to play Summer Camp Music Fest, Common Ground, Voodoo Fest, Musikfest, Summerfest and Riverbend; and sold tickets by the thousands across large swaths of North America. Some say they were cursed after deflowering a great Pharaoh’s daughter. Others claim they are reincarnated Grammy-Winning studio musicians. Regardless, HCTM’s mysterious personas, cunning song-craft and unrelenting live show will bend your brain and melt your face (Intended for mature audiences only).

The Four Freshmen

Friday, April 12, 2024 | 7:30 PM – One of America’s oldest active vocal groups have been bringing a jazz sensibility to the classic American songbook in their own special way for 75 years. With a tight four-part vocal blend, sort-of-like barbershop, by harmonically similar to jazz, The Four Freshmen deliver a fresh take on every tune from swinin’ up-tempo arrangements that make a quartet feel like a big band to dreamy crooner-style ballads. The Freshmen sound, both classic and sophisticated, yet young and hip, is equally adept at winding back the clock for older audience members as it is at entrancing younger members with its energetic and authentic blast from the past style. Hits include “Graduation Day,” Day by Day” and “It’s a Blue World.”

Foghat

Saturday, April 20, 2024  | 7:30 PM – Foghat live performances show why the band is still around and why they will be able to keep on rockin’ as long as they want to play! Their music is timeless, and touring is part of their DNA. Foghat’s live show is as intense as ever with the incredible energy and musicianship that one would expect and hope for from a seasoned band with such a long musical history and they are bringing their fans along for the ride. Foghat fans are everywhere and their audience consists of all ages. From the young who play Guitar Hero III and know all the lyrics to “Slow Ride,” to the Dazed and Confused generation of 30-40 somethings and the ‘boomers’ who bought Foghat’s first vinyl or 8-track. Looking out at the audience and seeing all generations rockin’ to Foghat is very gratifying to the band. Other hits include “Fool for the City” and “I Just Want to Make Love to You.”

Monday Night at the Movies

Before television, movie complexes and the internet – there were movie theatres. Grand movie palaces were built with great excess including elaborate interior design, conditioned air and the incredible ambiance that became an important part of the movie-going experience. Built in 1928 to capture the huge demand for “talkies,” The Ritz Theatre became “the” place to see movies in Tiffin. Take a Monday evening to enjoy a nostalgic journey down memory lane with the movies that played an integral role in the history of The Ritz.

Fête de la Musique | Celebrate Day of Music for Third Thursday

The sounds of Summer come alive in downtown Tiffin this Thursday during Fête de la Musique – Third Thursday!

Originated in France, Fête de la Musique (also known as “Music Day”) is a celebration of music where people take to the streets to perform live music. Community members and their families are encouraged to walk around downtown Tiffin and enjoy the music while shopping and supporting our local retailers and eateries. Fête de la Musique will showcase a diverse range of musical styles, from classic rock, country, and pop, to acoustic folk, indie, barbershop, blues, reggae, jazz, beatbox, R&B, and more. Music lovers of all tastes are sure to find something that resonates with them as they stroll through the streets of Downtown Tiffin.

One of the highlights of the event will be the Tiffin Community Foundation‘s sponsorship of “Kidchella” at Cherry Alley. This special area will give children the opportunity to try out different instruments, fostering a love for music and inspiring the next generation of musicians. In addition, music enthusiasts will have a unique chance to experience a remarkable tubular-pneumatic organ concert at the historic Second UCC church located at 156 Jefferson St. The church’s organ dates back to 1904. Third Thursday goers can also enjoy JAM’s Monthly Markets, that will feature their June Market and the vintage tea room ran by Tea Time Tiffin!

To enhance the evening further, Downtown Tiffin’s merchants, bars, and restaurants will be offering exclusive specials and promotions throughout the event. City Lot 7 and Court Street will also host a variety of food trucks. As the evening progresses, The Cherry Bombs will perform at The East Green Amphitheatre, sponsored by Nicole Miller – State Farm Insurance Agent. From 7-9 pm, this talented group will take center stage, captivating the audience with their dynamic high energy band featuring pop, rock and a little bit of country.

The success of Downtown Tiffin’s 3rd Thursday events would not be possible without the generous support of sponsors: Reineke Family Dealerships, UIS Insurance & Investments, and Destination Seneca County.

Don’t miss out on a great evening in our beautiful community. Music, food, shopping, and more? Sounds like music to our ears! See you Thursday!

Juneteenth in Seneca County

The Tiffin Juneteenth Committee welcomes area residents and visitors of all ages to participate in the Third Annual Juneteenth Celebration, June 17th – June 19th, 2023; this year’s theme is, “Community.”

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.

Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered at Appomattox Court House two months earlier in Virginia, but slavery had remained relatively unaffected in Texas—until U.S. General Gordon Granger stood on Texas soil and read General Orders No. 3: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

An Account Of A Local Hero’s Role in World War II

Press Release Courtesy of the Seneca County Museum and the Seneca County Commissioners–

The Seneca County Museum is pleased to announce a special program honoring the remarkable achievements of Marion Cramer, a Tiffin native and Calvert High School graduate, who played a crucial role in World War II Naval Intelligence and Cryptology. The event will occur on Sunday, June 11th, at 3:00 pm, at the Seneca County Museum at 28 Clay St.

A patriotic individual, Marion Cramer answered the call to duty after the Japanese’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Serving in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946, Cramer’s dedication and service were shrouded in secrecy. Even his wife, Agnes, and their children, Ann and Mark, were unaware of the nature of his contributions during the war. After Marion Cramer’s passing, his family discovered the truth about his extraordinary service as a cryptologic officer in Washington, D.C., and Pearl Harbor, HI. His mission involved breaking Japanese encoded messages as part of an ultra-secret assignment. The significance of his work in Communications Intelligence during World War II cannot be understated.

To shed light on Marion Cramer’s remarkable story, the Seneca County Museum has invited Master Chief Intelligence Specialist Andrew T. Jones, a retired member of the US Navy and a dedicated museum volunteer, to present a captivating account of Cramer’s service and the efforts in World War II Communications Intelligence. “Master Chief Jones brings a wealth of knowledge and personal insight, making this event an opportunity not to be missed,” said Museum Director Theresa Sullivan. Join us on Sunday, June 11th, at 3:00 pm at the Seneca County Museum for an afternoon filled with history, admiration and the celebration of a local hero. The event is open to the public, and all community members are invited to attend. This is a unique chance to honor the memory of Marion Cramer and gain a deeper understanding of the invaluable contributions made by individuals like him during World War II.

For further information about this event, please contact the Seneca County Museum, at (419) 447-5955.
